Taking the Initiative with 3rd Party Carbon Assessments for Business and Key Highway Activities

Crown Plus commission 3rd party carbon assessments.

In early 2022, Crown Plus Commercial Director Paul Conner, took the leadership decision to instruct an independent 3rd party Carbon Assessment for the business activities of Crown Plus, as well as a professional carbon emission comparison between the conventional method of Filter Drain Replacement and the Crown Plus in-situ recycling method.

“We have a vision to reduce our carbon footprint, however we can’t manage what we can’t measure” says Paul Conner. The Crown Plus Business Carbon Assessment was completed in accordance with the international standard BS EN ISO 14064-1, with the key outcome showing over 90% of the firm’s emissions resulted from the usage of diesel “The results although not totally surprising, succeed in providing us with a strong focus and a 2022 benchmark” Paul comments.

In the second assessment, a detailed analysis compared the resulting carbon emission between Crown Plus’s in-situ Filter Drain Recycling method compared to the conventional approach. This analysis was carried out over 5 schemes.   From the 5 schemes analysed a reduction of 332tCO₂e was shown using the in-site method, this reduction is equivalent to 824,000 miles driven by an average fuel-operated car. The Assessment concluded that overall, a 34% carbon reduction was attained using the In-situ Filter Drain Recycling approach.  This reduction was made up of the following savings:

78% Reduction in Carbon Emission from new material

73% Reduction in Carbon Emissions from Aggregate disposal

19% reduction in Carbon Emissions from Diesel

“This is a fantastic result” says Paul.  “We knew the in-situ method made environmental and economic sense but wanted this substantiated and independently verified. The process behind the assessment was rigorous, as was the data sets required; we wanted it to be thorough, we wanted to be tested”.

As a next step further assessments will be undertaken over the coming months on Crown Plus’s other core activities.  Paul concludes “This perfectly aligns with our vision to offer sustainably better highways solutions, working continually to reduce the carbon footprint for both our organisation and that of our clients”.
