Social Value Commitment

At Crown Plus we recognise the importance of giving back to the communities in which we operate. That is why we are pledging our commitment to help 4 communities around the UK each year with our Social Value Commitment

As civil engineers, we are a handy lot with abundant transferable skills and capabilities, we are therefore offering our services to support with creating, enhancing, or refurbishing community spaces within charitable or non-profit schemes. Utilising our array of experience, we will also be supporting at the outset of selected schemes by providing guidance and offering practical solutions to transform challenging or problematic spaces.

If you are a local organisation or would like to recommend a local project that would benefit from our involvement, then please contact us at Info@crown-plus.co.uk. We just ask that the scheme supports people in the community.

Please see below details of Social Value projects undertaken to date.

Together we Grow, Colchester – September 2023

In September, Crown Plus Limited joined forces with Taylor Woodrow and Eurovia Contracting South on a community allotment pathway, hard standing project at, ‘Together We Grow’.

‘Together we Grow CIC’ is a Social Enterprise based in Colchester, with the aim to improve the lives of communities and individuals through encouraging engagement with nature, educating people on how to grow their own food to help lead a healthier, happier and sustainable life.

Since its formation in 2017 ‘Together we Grow’ has gone from strength to strength, working with local primary schools, children leaving care, children not in mainstream education and adults from the age of 18 experiencing poor mental health.

The vision was to provide a safe and accessible pathway and hard standing to an on site horticulture classroom in the form of a fully kitted out shipping container, providing a dry area where the ‘Together we Grow’ team can host school visits and learning sessions about growing vegetables and cooking from the produce.

After much planning, driven by Hannah Paige at Eurovia, the project was finally realised in September 2023. A group of volunteers from Eurovia and sub-contractor partners including Crown Plus, volunteered for four days to complete the construction of an accessible pathway, with materials, labour and equipment donated for the week through Crown Plus, Keyline and Eurovia Contracting South (now Taylor Woodrow Civils South).

Thanks go to Crown Plus colleagues Sebastian Mann, Jake Cassidy, Lewis Mortimer, Curtis Howe, Carl Bevans and Dave Bevans for their hard work on this scheme.

Welcome Community Garden, Birmingham – June 2023

In early 2023 Crown Plus responded to a invitation from Colas for further partnership on the ‘Welcome Change’, Welcome Community Garden initiative located in East Meadway, Birmingham. The project saw Crown Plus join forces with Colas, Breedon Surfacing Solutions and Amberon TM to upgrade the charities Welcome Community Garden facility.

‘Welcome Change’ is a charity which supports the Solihull Integrated Addiction Services partnership, offering treatment and support services to individuals whose drug and alcohol use has become problematic; and to their families and friends.

The garden upgrade consisted of a much-needed proper site driveway and turning point, and the works were carried out during National Volunteering week in early June.

Crown Plus were proud to contribute to the project, supplying plant and labour in the form of a mini digger, dumper, ride on roller, edging boards and 3 operatives.

A big shout out to fellow contributors who made the scheme possible:

  • Amberon TM – Supplying the TM resource to install temporary traffic lights, pedestrian management, and the TM design.
  • Colas Area 9 – Supplying plant & labour (Grab Lorry, Small Mechanical Sweeper and 3 Operatives).
  • Breedon Surfacing Solutions – Supplying materials & labour (Type 1 Stone, Amber Gravel and 4 Operatives).

Special thanks were made to the Crown Plus team, Paul Conner, Sebastian Mann and Pete Wilkes for their contribution and involvement.

Haycop Nature Reserve

Crown Plus were delighted in June 2023 to support the Haycop Conversation Group in helping to reinstate the bridle way and footpaths through the nine-acre nature reserve.

Situated between Broseley and Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, the Haycop reserve features habitats including a flower meadow, old established broadleaf woodland, heathland and aquatic ecosystems and boasts fifty-eight species of birds.

Gary Price, Construction Director said: “Thank you to our tremendous colleagues who volunteered, on a sweltering hot June day, to roll up their sleeves and utilise their experience and enthusiasm on the latest of our community social value projects, it was great to witness the site and office colleagues pulling together on the common goal of making a difference.”

Val Harrison from the Haycop Conservation Group wrote to Crown Plus afterwards saying: “Thank you all so much for organising a workday on our Nature Reserve and bringing all your machinery/tools to help us. You did an excellent job widening our bridleway and restoring the drainage channels. Cutting back all the pathways also enables the public to walk around freely without getting caught up in the brambles or stinging nettles. Thank you again. Wildlife is also befitting from the work you did”.

Austrey C of E Primary School

Austrey C of E Primary School is situated in Atherstone, Warwickshire close to the M42 and within the Midlands TST Region of operation.

The school had plans for several small projects to make good and upgrade their outdoor play area and facilities, which Crown Plus undertook over the course of 2 days. A small, dedicated team from Crown Plus excavated and re-laid the existing slabs in the play area and installed a new sand pit area constructed from railways sleepers, in addition to the provision of a much-needed wellie rack.

Mrs Rushbrook of Austrey Primary School contacted the Crown Plus team after and said: “I can’t thank you all enough – this is absolutely superb! I know the children will love it and it will make such a huge difference to them.”

Eurovia Plant Pots and Wellies Scheme

In June 2022, Crown Plus were delighted to be able to support Eurovia UK Ltd on the Social Value project, Wellies and Plant Pots in Harlow, which provides a vital and safe place for young people and adults with additional needs and ensures that service users have year-round access to horticultural and outdoor therapy.

Colleagues from both Eurovia and Crown Plus provided hands on help over two days to transform additional allotment space for the project, with construction of a perimeter fence, clearing of the surrounding land/shrubs, and the installation of plot drainage channels, with materials donated by Crown Plus. Once completed it will be turned into an educational area for local school children with additional needs, providing a space for sensory activities & to learn about the importance of the environment.

Our thanks go to Eurovia UK ltd for providing us the opportunity to be involved with this brilliant scheme, as well as our Crown Plus superstars who rolled up their sleeves Sebastian Mann, Steven Webb, Kam Sarai, Karl Bevans and Dave Bevans.
